The presence of magnetite in Michigan's Upper Peninsula iron ore disrupts compasses and was an impediment to early prospecting. The magnetite here, sized up, disrupts passage into the mine, not through obstruction but by redirection.

Magnetite that is strongly polarized is also sometimes called lodestone.
