Samara Pearlstein is an artist, educator, and arts administrator in the Boston, MA area. She studied art and biology at the University of Michigan, and received her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University. Her work addresses human-made and geological marks on the land and the ways that landscape is depicted historically and today, especially looking at extractive industries in Massachusetts and Michigan along with activities like exploration and surveying. This work also focuses on what people are allowed to be depicted in/on the land, and who is allowed to mark or claim the land. Other ongoing projects deal with systems of information and the frameworks we use to make sense of them; perception (and its failures); the relationship between the original and the replica; humor and the absurd; and entropy. She also makes many images of cats.
